Workplace Repetitive Strain Injuries

One of the things that people fear about working in an office is how dreary and repetitive it can be. They think of an office and they think of going into an overly lit room with buzzing bright lights, sitting at a computer from 9-5 and writing or filing the same things over and over again while hearing co-workers ramble on about the same things day in and day out. While that does sound dreadful, its really only an annoying thing. But repetition of the same tasks every day can affect a person’s health in many unexpected ways.

Repetitive Strain Injury occurs when someone does the same thing over and over. According to the US Department of Labor, these injuries affect hundreds of thousands of Americans per year with collective costs reaching up to $20 billion a year in costs. Common types of RSI are:

·         Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
·         Epicondylitis (Elbow Injuries)
·         Ganglion Cyst (Swelling or lump in joint or tendon)
·         Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (Dry, swollen hands / loss of muscle control)
·         Tendonitis (Tearing and swelling of tendons)

Most of the injuries listed above can be cured with some down time and basic forms of therapy. Still, they can be unbelievably painful and straining. They may also require extensive medical condition to assure a proper recovery. If these injuries occurred in a workplace, you could be eligible for workers’ compensation. Workers’ compensation can help with any medical expenses and lost time at work and could help a victim to keep from going broke.

While workers' compensation situations can vary from case to case, it is important for an individual to keep in mind what they can realistically expect. New York State law regarding workers' compensation operates on the following if an individual qualifies:

·         Medical treatment is paid for by the workers' compensation provider.
·         Compensation for injuries that affect the legs, arms, hands, feet and facial scars.
·         Expenses related to the injury, such as traveling to doctors, prescription costs and other injury-related necessities.

Fighting for workers' compensation can seem like a very complicated process. But it doesn't have to be! With a skilled lawyer on your side, the process could be a lot easier. It should be noted that any injuries should be reported to the employer within 30 days of the occurrence. Time is of the essence in these cases. Act quickly!
